3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting cons, but repetitive and ego-trippy
Mitnick has his own reputation to live up to with this book, which sets a pretty high bar for the audience who knows him as the "World's Most Notorious Hacker."Unfortunately, while he knows the material cold, his skills as an author are less stellar.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book
This book seriously highlights the stupidity of people in the world. It shows how clever people go very far by asking basic questions to get what and where they want. The samples are entertaining and worth reading. This is some great education for the naive people of the world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but weak in writing skill and quality of advice
I enjoyed the first more-than-half of the book which dealt with various kinds of social engineering attacks. Each was at least plausible and usually interesting.I was constantly aware, however, that the titles of the chapters only vaguely correlated to the examples given: there must be a better way to structure the content (possibly starting with defining various kinds of attacks then identifying those techniques as they come up in the examples.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Book with Code that Works and Compiles
The code works and compiles fine with Visual Studio 6.0. The reader who said he had problems with Visual Studio 2005 obviously didn't read the requirements for using the code. The book provides lots of useful code for implementing complex models such as the HJM and Libor Market Models.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book mildly useful, the code is a piece of junk
I used this book for my course in Derivatives Pricing and I faced countless problems in compiling the source code.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book to Implement Models
I found this book to be quite useful especially in my work working on the trading desk in NYC for one of the major tier one investment firms. I have been able to adapt a lot of the code for use in our systems. The author provides many useful libraries and routines that can be modified for pricing, hedging, and trading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Use When Writing an SSL app.
If you have little or no experience with SSL, or OpenSSL, get this book. It explains the principles behind SSL, and then goes on to cover OpenSSL. The companion website opensslbook.com contains the latest examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars openssl programming cleanly explained
The book starts with a general introduction of encryption in general, then SSL protocol in general. Then openssl command line interface is introduced with some easy to follow examples. Later openssl programming is explained in detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ding, Ding, We have a winner.
First, this book does _NOT_ have a installation walk through...YES!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Read Info For Linux Admins
The Hacking Exposed books have set the bar for this genre of security book. Hacking Linux Exposed - 2nd Edition doesn't fail in meeting that bar as well. If you've read Hacking Exposed - 4th Edition and think this book can't tell you anything you don't already know- think again. For those who administer Linux boxes this book provides an in-depth look at specific hacks and vulnerabilities unique to the Linux operating system and the accompanying fixes and workarounds to protect yourself. The book is overflowing with examples and sample commands that users can immediately put to use to better understand the risks and how to mitigate them. Hacking Exposed is a must-read for security- this book is a must-read for Linux security.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't have this book? You're BEGGING for trouble...
When I first starting using Linux systems and putting them online I had NO idea what sort of grief I was in for.The reason for that grief: I had NO clue how to 'harden' a system or what that term even meant.By not knowing that I put upsystems that were quickly exploited by script kiddies and SPAM houses looking for open relays to use for SPAM and for 'zombies' to use in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.I bought this book, read it, and haven't had those problems since. If you are going to do *anything* with Linux on the internet then GET THIS BOOK NOW.Unless, of course, you *want* to have your computers destroyed on a weekly basis... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey of RFID; present and future issues.
This is a compilation of papers from numerous organisations with diverse opinions on how this technology will develop.RFID presents opportunities for great improvement in business efficiencies for corporations and better service for customers and consumers. The flip side is that RFID has the potential to negatively impact individual privacy more than most technologies.
4-0 out of 5 stars speculative deployments
The chapters are written by different authors, concerning various aspects about RFID. The topics give an idea of the scope of RFID deployment. None of the chapters would be considered technical. You are not required to be an electrical engineer to follow any chapter.
3-0 out of 5 stars Fast track RFID project helper
For those who want faster diving in RFID technology I would recommend to take a look at DataBrokers TagTracker. Their new version works with LF and HF transponders and uses Hibernate to store scanned data in a database. It comes with PIRF-Lite (Java written API) which allows the user to make new transponder layouts and interact with the RFID reader differently than it is shown in TagTracker. TagTracker itself is enough to collect RFID data from different locations (RFID readers) and store it in a common database. Like a data pump. All you need is to create your own interface to query the database using your preferred languages/tools , etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book
I recieved a PSP for christmas, but until I got this book I had no idea what a powerful machine it is! This book will teach you how to do anything you have ever wanted to do, including; build a battery pack, revert your firmware (without bricking your psp!), turn a one player game into a two player game, write your own homebrew applications, watch Tivo, take documents with you, teach your PSP how to read, instant message, and tons of other cool hacks! The accomompanying website is also a great help, since it is filled with homebrew applications! I also highly suggest his other book, Geek my Ride.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice capstone set for the S+ exam
I liked these books, they got right to the point. Questions were good also, with good explanations. I found this set to be the best for someone with a security background to prepare for the exam (personally, I have a CISSP), or as a capstone following more traditional preparation for new security folks. I took the S+ exam because I got an email from CompTIA saying I could get a shirt if I took & passed the exam before the end of December 2005. A shirt! Well...count me in!: )
4-0 out of 5 stars Good last minute study guide

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Purchase
I agree with most of the reviews on this page. Regardless of Microsoft's current/past practices (which have absolutely nothing to do with the credibility of THIS book), it gives a good background on security in many situations. The part I found most helpful were the 'How To's' sections. There are good real world examples that are straight to the point and easy to comprehend. I code in C# w/SQL Server and all examples in this book use that combination; PERFECT FIT!4-0 out of 5 stars Wow.MS is certainly an unusual source of security info...
However, this is overall a good book on the subject.5-0 out of 5 stars Good Prescriptive Guidance
The Patterns and Practices Series represents the bridge between known best practices and applications. Busy application developers are frequently tasked with building complex and secure system, and at the same time, are required to operate with limited resources and time. This series, and ASP.NET Security specifically, give good prescriptive guidance for a large number of common application scenarios. The how-to sections are exceeding valuable. Check out other books in this series and you will find lots of good guidance to jump start development on the MS platform. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I am using ASP.NET 2.0 with forms-based security and wanted to authenticate and authorize using Active Directory users and groups as ASP.NET users and roles. After many hours and much research, I had authentication working. After more hours and research, I was looking at doing authorization using ADAM and not getting it to work. I was reading posts, blogs, MSDN articles, everything I could find. I purchased this e-book and downloaded it. Within hours I had authorization working in Active Directory like I originally wanted to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is one of the best technical books I've ever read. It gives us detailed information of how ASP.NET 2.0 works behind the scene.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book , gives background info.
This is a great book about asp.net 2.0, IIS and security. It provides a lot of background info, once you have that the other pieces of asp.net fall into place and things make a lot more sense. I think for code examples I can always use Google, background info on how it all works together is what you read a book for and this book delivers. I hope this will not be the author's last book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
I found the material mostly interesting if not occassionaly difficult to read. However, I found it infurating that the review questions and problems asked at the end of the chapters, could not be answered based on the materials in the chapters.
5-0 out of 5 stars up to date on using cryptography
Stallings presents an updated education on cryptography. With a secondary emphasis on network security. In the cryptographic sections, there is a strong mathematical flavour. The narrative is not a high level, management-type discussion. It favours the professional mathematician and programmer, and ideally the intersection of these two skill sets.
5-0 out of 5 stars As with all of Stallings' books, this is top notch for intro and advanced.
I am using this book for a Graduate class.William Stallings always has been very thorough yet easy to read. You can see his dedication to any of his technical books by visiting his website.Very highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book from a REAL trader
What I really liked most about this book is that it was written by someone who actually trades for a living instead of a vendor who makes his living off selling courses, classes, and books. Gary Smith took a $2,000 account which he struggled with for 19 years to a $700,000 account after reading hundreds of trading books. How did he do this? By finally quitting trying to go for the big when and focused on gaining money each month. He really made the big money at first by trading S&P futures then when he got in the 6 figure range he switched to mutual funds only because he can not deal with the volitilitu of individual stocks. This book is like a modern day version of Nicolas Darvas's "How I made $2,000,000" it is the true story ofhow an individual broke the trading code. Here are my key learnings:
4-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing honesty with no hype
This was one of the first books I bought on trading while I was doing it part time. I was struck by all of the parallels between what he had experienced and what I was experiencing in my trading.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gary Smith Is the Real Deal
I first learned about Gary Smith on the floor of the CBOT, where he was something of a living legend to speculators there. This man is the real deal. Yes, he actually knows how to trade, unlike the myriad of charlatans in the trading book business. One of the most important points to emanate from Smith's book is the fact that the man went through years of suffering as he attempted to reach his goal. Trading is not something you can master in a few months. Many people quit lucrative jobs thinking they are going to be the next Jesse Livermore or Nicholas Darvas. Folks, it's not going to happen unless you are prepared to study, work hard and take a series of blows to your trading account and your ego.

Effective Oracle Database 10g Security by Design is sooo helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Enough for the CIA
It would be easy to be secure if all the data were in one room, there were no connections to the outside world (well I guess you have to have power coming in, but that's all), and there were no people who knew the data.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for Security Professionals
If you really are looking for theory to be able to have a better consulting experience or drive your company into deeper waters regarding security this is your book. For students starting on this I would notrecommend it, you may fall asleep during your first couple of pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good material but ....
I'm not an English guru nor a native language speaker; but I feel bad when seeing typo or grammer errors in a professional book. I have no idea how did some of poorly phrased senteses made it through the 3rd edition!! It's just a bad feeling when reading such book versus a simple fluent web page on the same material. Also the outlining of the book is a little tricky. Most chapters are over 60 pages and they need better outlining. Other than that, the authors know what they are talking about and made a good effort to sort plenty of introductory materail in a text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent condition
The book was received in good condition, during the period of time requested, and as promised, it is a US edition. ... Read more
