2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
I bought this book at Borders knowing that it was about customizing and not "hacking."What I didn't know was that you had to download so many programs from the web, which many people (including myself) are not comfortable with, before you can begin customizing in the first place.I've experienced problems with several of the things the author says to download, and found spyware on my computer, which is brand new, that was not previously there (VVSN.exe, a registered security risk according to liutilities.com).I would not recommend this book to anyone; I'm sure there are better ones out there that are more worth your time and money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only OK -- Mostly Surface Hacks, nothing too deep
I was hoping for a more in-depth guide to XP, but this book is mostly surface changes to the appearance.Cute, but hardly deep hacking.I'll probably be selling this book very soon, if that tells you what a treasure it is.

1-0 out of 5 stars DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
very dissapponting. i orederd this book with high hopes onlly to be shot down. i knew everything in this book. im not gonna say things were wrong but they were things you dont want to do. the writer instructs you to do things that are not at all something you want to do. and yes he is right when he says "follow my directions you'll see a big change" yes a change in deed a bad change please do not waste your money you can find the same info on a website free. just google what your looking for. my computer know is very high. i have even interned at jp morgan chase. installing software and fixing/installing computers for the higher ups. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars too fast pace, unsufficient details
This book does not offer you the info to start with Mambo/Joomla without help. It simply lacks the depth for it. I bought the book, and followed the examples, that's all i can do now. The examples are simple, but for a joomla starter hardley explained. Wat cracks me is that there's not any explanatio about the structure of Joomla, the relations between objects and their calls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced view of Mambo CMS
This book is a very good and complete tutorial on advanced uses of the Mambo CMS and associated components.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Mambo - Good Introduction
"Mastering Mambo" is a new book for people running and building websites with the Mambo Content Management System., It was written in an awkward time, when the Mambo CMS was in the process of splitting from Joomla, but because the codebases of both projects is still so similar, "Mastering Mambo" is a relevant book for both Mambo and Joomla users.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great study guide and practical book
Congratulations to Helen and Tcat, their book is one of the most organized and practical technical books I have ever seen. I has been very useful to study and day-to-day tasks. A very good choice to prepare to Security+ Exam and IT security career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where practical and theoretical meet
I like how this book ties in real life examples and stories into its pages. This makes it a bit more interesting read then most dry, boring, and technical books on Security+.

4-0 out of 5 stars The adventures of an information security professional and his efforts to secure corporate networks
Mark Osborne doesn't like auditors. In fact, after reading this book, one gets the feeling he despises them. Perhaps he should have titled this book 'How I learned to stop worrying and hate auditors'. Of course, that is not the main theme of How to Cheat at Managing Information Security, but Osborne never hides his feeling about auditors, which is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the auditor jokes start in the preface, and continue throughout the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Security is a lifestyle
Security isn't just something you "turn on".Security is a mindset, a set of systems and practices that affect all aspects of your work environment. And implementing security practices--especially in an organization devoid of such--is a daunting task.I found this to be an excellent book in that the author obviously understands security. He's dedicated his life keeping privileged information safe.More importantly, this book is laid out in such a way that it will lead the uninitiated, newly appointed security expert at any organization through the process of implementing a security framework.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very usefull book
I am disappointed by this book. I do not find much examples in this book that you can use to write a secured web services program. Most examples in this book are in the form of XML that the security architecture uses. If you are planning to write a secure web service after reading this book, then I do not recommend this book. This book provides a general overview of Web Services Security Architecture with little insight on how to actually write one. If you are developing Web Services using Java, this book is of little help. If you are developing Web Services using .NET, then three are better choices than this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Points you in the right direction
Writing a book like this is always going to be a difficult task in an up and coming technology. This book handles it exceptionally well. Although being written in 2003 it manages to cover core web service security issues such as WS-Security, SAML and two options of identification softwre such as Liberty Alliance and the Microsoft .NET passport. For once it is refreshing to read a book that is concerned more with security for you and not trying to evangelise something down your neck. It introduces a good range of security issues that approach different aspects of web services security. This was a great start for me to start learning about web services security and the approaches to implementing it. So its a must read for any beginner in the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially for the novice website designer
A team effort, Web Services Security describes XML and Web Services security technologies, including SAML and the WS-Security roadmap, and provides practical examples in Java and C#. Web Services Security deftly and accessibly explains the technologies in plain English, using clear analogies to help the reader grasp the concepts needed to understand Web Services security, and illustrate implementation techniques as well as case studies featuring global service-provision initiatives such as the Liberty Alliance Project. Highly recommended, especially for the novice website designer. 336 pages ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unless you're already well-versed in the topic ...
Unless you're already very well-versed in the subject matter, ( sql injection, cross-site scripting, session hijacking, remote execution, sanitizing user data/input, ssh, encryption, ssl, dangers of shared-host scenarios, bulletproofing db installations, user verification, captchas, remote procedure calls ) this material is relatively comprehensive and valuable. Well-organized, well thought out, I won't hesitate to recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good book on PHP security issues
PHP applications written without a concern for security risk cross-site scripting, SQL injection, session hijacking, and a multitude of other potential problems. This book examines how to setup a secure environment including encryption, hashing, SSL and using PHP to connect to SSL servers. The authors also examine how to install and configure OpenSSH and using it with PHP applications.Of course they also deal with the usual concerns of user authentication, permissions, restrictions, validating input, preventing SQL injection, preventing cross-site scripting, preventing remote execution (including PHP code injection and embedding), security for temporary files, and preventing session hijacking. The Pro PHP Security is written specifically for PHP programmers working in the Apache, MySQL, and PHP 5 environment and is highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information with lots of links to addtional resources
This book is great because it's thorough and on each topic it gives lots of links to additional resources. It's easy to read and it's organized well so you can find what you're looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Book
They don't make them like this anymore. Amid the "Learning XXX in 21 days" and various other computer book for which depth is almost non existent (and are read like eating peanuts), this is a refreshing book that talks about solutions to sometimes common (IMHO) coding problems.
4-0 out of 5 stars Like a bejeweled fountain pen--beautiful, but sadly outdated
A perennial topic of conversation among computer programmers is whether programs are art or not. Some algorithms are so beautiful, so elegantly executed, that the aesthetic is undeniable. But is it art?
5-0 out of 5 stars Magic
First of all, the book itself is incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much-Needed Book
OpenVPN is an excellent open source SSL-based VPN solution that still isn't very well-known, but this book should make it more accessible to network administrators, and help accelerate its adoption. The book is a practical reference, suitable to both beginning and advanced users. The author, Markus Feilner, has done his homework well, and the book reflects his extensive experience using OpenVPN, particularly with Linux and Windows networks. He has structured the book so that it starts at the basics, and then it builds in complexity. It makes good use of informal explanatory text, as well as tables, examples, exercises, and screenshots. The book also covers additional programs that are useful in working with OpenVPN. Finally, there is an appendix with links to further information on many related topics, followed by a good index. One minor area that the book does not discuss is the use of OpenVPN with the OpenWrt Linux distribution for wireless routers. Nevertheless, the book should save users many hours of searching for OpenVPN solutions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most impressive extension of the term
The term financial engineering is appearing increasingly in the title of various works. What it actually means remains nebulous, for even natural sciences and engineering remain irresolvable at their respective cores. This is evidently addressing another boon of the digital age, where equations and approximations can be done both automatically, and with extreme rapidity. It is only natural for the advantages of this to trickle into research of finance and economics, only now it is becoming a steady stream, and, with the inclusion of this work, a most sound one at that.4-0 out of 5 stars Integrated treatment
The text covers quite a broad range of topics. It assumes that the reader has a fairly good grasp of statistics and mathematics (senior undergraduate level).Introductory financial material reads ok.The algorithmic approach is useful and so are the answers to select problems. However, some could find the material too tightly packed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
I'm an old CCIE/CNE/CISSP, and I have purchased dozens of technical study guides over the years.I believe this is one of the better exam certification guides.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great exam book 642-502!!!
Best reference for the exam.It covered everything necessary for the SNRS exam.I wish all the books gave me as much information as this for the specific exam.Nice job!

This Exam Certification Guide is intended for candidates preparing to take the SNRS Exam in pursuit of CCSP certification. The book covers all of the exam objectives posted on Cisco.com sufficiently. The accompanying CD provides the book in PDF format, as well as a practice test engine to help the reader validate his/her comprehension of the material.Like other Exam Certification Guides from Cisco Press, each chapter starts with a "Do I Know This Already?" and ends with a additional Q&A.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich history and nice technology review
Singh has done a wonderful job of making a dry subject fascinating. The history is amazing and well written. The technology of code making and code braking is quite complete, and could not be made more interesting of read. The end of the book may get too technical for the non-technical reader, but even they will be more than pleased with the first 3/4 of the book. The nature of the subject forces recent history to be left uncovered, but you will be amazed at what has recently become known from fifty years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Summary of Codes, Etc.
Simon Singh has done an excellent job of narrating the history of codes and ciphers, covering material in quite a comprehensive manner, yet explaining it in a fashion that even readers who are not particularly gifted in mathematics will understand. His narration of the (frequently military) history surrounding some important events in the history of cryptography added considerable interest for me; there's just enough of it to add another dimension without there being so much that it detracts from the main story. His decision to include the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphics and Cretan Linear B script was a wise one, as well.As he notes, neither was an attempt to conceal the meanings, but the methods used are exactly parallel to many used in deciphering codes and ciphers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes cryptography entertaining
This book is an excellent one that intertwines the history, strategy, and mathematics ofthose dedicated to encrypting messages and those dedicated to exposing the encryption strategy and thus the message. It explains the idea behind several kinds of encryption strategies starting with Mary Queen of Scots and how her personal involvement in the plot against Queen Elizabeth I of England was exposed when her correspondence that was encrypted with simple monoalphabetic substitution was decyphered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Teacher
Although the books in this series are a little on the expensive side, I think they are worth it. Using this book and the one before it I was able to understand the basics behind Linux administration, installation and networking. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, misaligned, bloated + boring = 2 stars
I gave this book 2 stars because it's overpriced, misaligned, bloated and quite boring. Lots of time, Kramer used 200 words to explain something when 50 would have been enough. There's alot of minor errors + many cases where the author is completely wrong. The content covers CISA's material but it simply does not match with CISA's domains. If I had to throw a stone to someone, that would be to the editor cos that guy simply did not do his job. There's way too many content errors, spelling mistakes and ambiguous sentences.
1-0 out of 5 stars Obtuse and perhaps worthless
Why use 1 word when 12 will bewilder the reader and make the book that much thicker.I can not believe that a qualified editor reviewed this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I purchased this book -- unfortunately before I read the reviews here -- to prepare for the CISA. Despite the optimistic title, the book fails to deliver in just about every area. The book is not connected to the exam in any logical form or structure. One of the biggest draws for a book like this is the practice test software. Sadly, this book fails yet again. The software works, but the questions in some cases are just plain wrong! I wrote to the editor and they offered me an errata sheet that I could use to spot mistakes in their data???? What good is that? My advice is that you skip this book, avoid this author, and not patronize this publisher since they are not willing to make good on their promises. ... Read more
